Muotiala Accommodation and Activity Centre Association Preventive Mental Health Work and Support for Rehabilitation

Our work forms include supported accommodation and home rehabilitation, work activity and vocational rehabilitation, family work, group and educational activity, voluntary work and recreational activity.

We work in co-operation with actors in the field of public social and health care.

Supported Accommodation

The units for supported accommodation are intended for mental health rehabilitants that need support and guidance in coping with everyday life. Each resident has a private flat.

One of the supported accommodation units is reserved for persons with both mental health and substance abuse problems.

The residents are assisted in getting used to cooking, cleaning, running errands etc., and in planning their daily and weekly schedules. The rehabilitation also helps the resident to recognise the symptoms of illness and to manage it in daily life. The goal of supported accommodation is to learn to live as independently as possible and, according to potential, to move into completely independent accommodation.

Home Rehabilitation

The clients of home rehabilitation are singles or couples from the City of Tampere who are rehabilitating from mental health problems. The clients are guided and supported in identifying their personal resources. The client relationship has a determined duration (a maximum of six months approximately).

Work Activity and Vocational Rehabilitation

Our workshop provides opportunities for a wide variety of work in a safe environment that supports rehabilitation. We make items for sale in our own outlet and undertake subcontracting for companies. The workshop includes metal, wood, and textile shops, packing department, lunch restaurant, cleaning department and sales outlet.

In co-operation with our vocational rehabilitation unit, we also implement and develop opportunities for work tryouts and assessments of work capability.

Family Work

Family work provides support for the interaction between family members and in issues related to child upbringing, as well as help during crises. Peer groups and excursions are also organised for the client families.

The client relationships are designed to be of short duration (approximately 3–6 months).
Support for new families provides preventive support for families expecting their first child and expectant single mothers who are residents of Tampere. Home visits are made during the pregnancy, after childbirth and during the early interaction stage (while the baby is about 4 to 8 months old).

Group and Educational Activity

The Association’s Activity Centres are open to all those interested in group, recreational and peer support activity. The Activity Centres are located adjacent to the units of supported accommodation.

Our educational and publicity activity provides experiential information on mental health to students and professionals of social and health care as well as to the general public. The information is provided by people who take part in our activity and so possess experiential expertise on mental health. The participants are trained to act as educators and information providers on the basis of their experiential expertise. The activity is open to persons who have personal experience of mental health disturbances (rehabilitants, family members and support persons).

Volunteer Work

The Muotiala Accommodation and Activity Centre Association trains support persons and provides contacts to them. The volunteer support persons may accompany rehabilitants on shopping trips or in leisure pursuits, or they may simply drop in for a chat and to provide a friendly ear, so as to help rehabilitants feel a little less lonely.
